Root Canal Treatment in Brantford
A root canal is a common, well established procedure designed to save a tooth that has been damaged by deep decay or infection, removing the source of pain rather than removing the tooth itself. At Lifetime Dental, Dr. Kim performs root canal treatment using Microscope Assisted Dentistry, a level of precision offered by only a handful of dentists in the area.
Why a Root Canal Might Be Recommended
A root canal becomes necessary when a deep cavity reaches the pulp, the innermost part of the tooth, or when trauma has damaged the tooth's nerve. Common symptoms include sensitivity to hot or cold, pain while chewing, or swelling around the tooth caused by infection. During treatment, the damaged nerve is removed while your tooth's natural root structure stays intact, eliminating the source of pain and infection while preserving your own tooth.
While prevention through regular checkups and cleanings is always the goal, a root canal is a genuinely good option when a tooth can still be saved, and most patients feel little to no pain during the procedure itself thanks to modern local anesthesia.
Precision You Can See the Difference In
Dr. Kim is one of only a handful of dentists who extensively uses Microscope Assisted Dentistry across all areas of care, including root canal treatment. This magnified view allows for greater precision when navigating a tooth's canals, helping preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible and supporting a more predictable, longer lasting result.
What Happens During Treatment
Your consultation. We review your symptoms and history, take or examine x rays as needed, and discuss anesthesia options and what to expect.
Numbing and isolation. The tooth is fully numbed, and a small protective barrier is placed around it to keep the area clean and dry throughout treatment.
Cleaning the canal. An opening is made in the top of the tooth, and the damaged nerve and pulp tissue are carefully removed and cleaned out.
Sealing the tooth. Once thoroughly cleaned, the inside of the tooth is filled and sealed. Depending on your case, this may be completed in one visit or may require a second appointment.
Protecting your tooth afterward. A tooth that has had a root canal becomes more brittle over time, so a crown is usually recommended afterward to protect it from cracking or breaking under normal biting pressure.
Root Canal or Extraction, Why Save the Tooth?
While removing a damaged tooth might seem like a quicker option, keeping your natural tooth whenever possible generally supports better long term function, appearance, and overall oral health, and helps you avoid the additional cost and treatment involved in replacing a missing tooth later with a bridge or implant. Dr. Kim will always give you an honest recommendation based on whether your specific tooth can realistically be saved.
What Does a Root Canal Cost in Brantford?
Cost depends primarily on which tooth is being treated, since molars have more canals and require more time than front teeth. As a general guide, root canal treatment in Ontario commonly ranges from around seven hundred dollars for a front tooth to around two thousand one hundred dollars for a molar, with a crown afterward typically adding another twelve hundred to two thousand dollars. These are general ranges, not a quote, and we will provide a clear, written estimate specific to your tooth after an exam.
Is a Root Canal Covered in Ontario?
OHIP does not cover root canal treatment for adults. However, the federal Canadian Dental Care Plan does cover standard root canals on front teeth, premolars, and first and second molars, without requiring pre authorization, for eligible patients based on household income. Many private insurance plans also cover a portion of root canal treatment, typically fifty to eighty percent, up to an annual maximum. Our team can help you understand your specific coverage before treatment begins.

What Our Brantford Patients Are Saying
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How much should a root canal cost in Ontario?
Root canal treatment in Ontario commonly ranges from around seven hundred dollars for a front tooth to around two thousand one hundred dollars for a molar, before any crown. We provide a specific estimate after examining your tooth.
2. Is a root canal covered by an Ontario dental plan?
OHIP does not cover root canal treatment for adults. The federal Canadian Dental Care Plan does cover standard root canals on front teeth, premolars, and most molars for eligible patients, and many private insurance plans cover a portion as well.
3. How much should I pay for root canal treatment?
What you actually pay depends on which tooth is treated, whether a crown is needed afterward, and your specific insurance or CDCP coverage. We always provide a clear, written estimate before treatment begins so there are no surprises.
4. Do dentists still recommend root canals?
Yes. Root canal treatment remains a standard, well established, and safe procedure used to save teeth that would otherwise need to be extracted. It continues to be the recommended treatment by dentists and endodontists whenever a tooth can realistically be saved.
5. Is a root canal painful?
Most patients feel little to no pain during the procedure itself, since the area is fully numbed beforehand. Some mild soreness in the days afterward is normal and typically manageable with over the counter pain relief.
6. Will I need a crown after my root canal?
In most cases, yes. A tooth that has had a root canal becomes more brittle over time, and a crown helps protect it from cracking under normal biting pressure.
7. How long does root canal treatment take?
Many root canals are completed in a single visit lasting around sixty to ninety minutes, though more complex cases, particularly molars, sometimes require a second appointment.
